Environment challenges have implications in society: AU VC

Visakhapatnam, June 20 (UNI) Andhra University Vice-Chancellor L Venugopal Reddy today said ''environment challenge, one of the serious challenges that humanity is facing, has several implications in society.'' Addressing the one-day workshop organised by Environment Protection Training and Research Insititue (EPTRI) of AU, he said many human activities were causing the emission of increased quantities of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. As a result, the concentration of these chemical substances in the air had already risen substantially, and was still rising continuously.

Mr Reddy said the climate change was expected to affect several aspects of environment like variations in the occurrence of cyclonic storms, rise in the sea level resulting low land inundation and groundwater resources contamination.

Narrating India as one among the 27 countries most vulnerable to the impacts of global warming, he said accelerated sea level rise had great significance to India as it had an extensive low lying densely populated coastal zone.
