Protest, blockade over police brutality
New Delhi, June 19 (UNI) Dozens of people today protested outside the office of Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) in Rajouri Garden area of West Delhi alleging the death of a 30-year-old transporter due to police brutality.
Demonstrators raised slogans against police high-handedness and blocked traffic of Ring Road for some time before senior police officials intervened, sources said.
The agitators later withdrew after they were assured that the matter would be looked into by the police officials.
Protestors alleged that Jawahar Lal, a small-time transporter of Shakurpur, was beaten by traffic policemen on June 9 following an argument over a 'challan' while he was on his way to Jakhira.
Jawahar's condition worsened after he reached home following which he was admitted to the Maharaja Agrasen Hospital on June 14 where he died yesterday.
Police said the problem before them was that the body has already been cremated and no complaint was made on the day of incident.
Jawahar is survived by three children.
