AIAIADMK functionaries arrested; Case against DMK, AIADMK MLAs

Madurai, June 19 (UNI) Three AIADMK functionaries, arrested last night, were let on bail today and a case had been registered against a DMK legislator in connection with a clash involving volunteers of both the dominant Dravidian parties during the campaign for the June byelection to the Madurai West Assembly constituency.

Police also registered a case against AIADMK legislator from Usilampatti, M Mahendran, on a complaint that he was involved in cash distribution to voters.

AIADMK Youth Wing District Secretary M S Pandian and two other functionaries of the party's frontal organisations were arrested after a clash involving DMK supporters led by party legislator Ghouse Bhasha.

According to the complaint by the DMK, the AIADMK functionaries were engaged in distribution of money to voters in the Goripalayam area of the city. When questioned a clash ensued in which Pandian sustained injuries.

Police who rushed to the spot recovered crude weapons from the vehicles used by the AIADMK leaders.

A complaint against the DMK legislator and his supporters, lodged by the AIADMK was also registered by the police. According to the complaint the DMK supporters have launched the attack without any provocation.

On a further complaint from the DMK, alleging bribing of voters by the AIADMK in the Azhagaradi area, a case was registered against the AIADMK Legislator M Mahendran.

So far cases had been registered against over 100 people regarding election related offences.
