Bangalore to grow vertical now!

Bangalore, June 17: Bangalore will grow vertical, thanks to the Bangalore Development Authority's (BDA) master plan 2015 that was cleared by the state cabinet on Friday.

After a two-year wait and 6,600 objections, the draft master plan with multiple changes made by the state government, has finally made it past the start line. With cabinet clearance, the plan will be notified and put into action, primary and secondary education minister Basavaraj S Horatti told reporters here after the cabinet meeting.

Dealing with a growing city whose population is to cross 10 million by 2021, on par with several European nations, the master plan's vision has gone skywards. Builders have been permitted more floor area ratio (FAR) which permits more built-up floor space on the same plot of land.

The FAR is calculated like this: On a 60 x 40 site, the floor area is 2,400 square feet. If FAR is 4, it will be 2,400 x 4 = 9,600 square feet.

Keeping in mind the city's booming commercial growth, the areas around the proposed Bangalore Metro stations have been permitted an unheard-of FAR of 4, as against the present average of 2. In several areas, particularly the designated IT zones, FAR is 3 and, depending on road width, can be enhanced to 4.
