'World day to Combat Desertification' at IIFM
Bhopal, June 16 (UNI) In order to raise awareness among people, policy makers and stakeholders about desertification, 'World day to Combat Desertification' is being organised at the Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM) premises here on June 17.
The programme is being jointly organised by the IIFM, the Regional Centre for National Afforestation and the Eco-Development Board.
Eminent people from various sectors like administration, academics, civil societies, etc will take part in the programme, which would start at 1030 hours, according to a release issued here.
Desertification is a major global environmental challenge before humanity with serious implications like environmental destruction, forced migration, poverty, starvation, climate change, conflict, etc.
India is a signatory to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
It implements the convention, as large percentage of its land in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid zones are facing degradation.
This year's world day theme is 'Desertification and climate change - one global challenge'.
A documentary 'Harvesting of Dust' and 'Climate Change - An untold story' would also be screened on the occasion to educate students about the impact of desertification.
Plantation activity would be carried out after the event.
Earlier, a painting competition for children of two age groups -- 6-11 years and 12-16 years -- would be held at 0930 hours.
