Lucknow, June 16 (UNI) After widespread protest against irregularities in the results of the Uttar Pradesh Combined Pre-Medical Test (CPMT), the state government late last night ordered withholding of the results and constituted a two-member committee to look into the matter.

''Taking the reports of violent protests in different parts of the state by students against the results, the Chief Minister has ordered a probe and asked for a preliminary report within three days,'' Medical Education Minister Lalji Verma said here.

The two-member committee comprising Special Secretary Medical Education S K Raghuvanshi and Director General, Medical Education Dr Kamal Sahni, will submit its report within three days, Mr Verma added.

Earlier, students' protests were reported from Allahabad, Kanpur, Varanasi, Meerut and other parts of the state since yesterday after allegations were made that CPMT results were ''rigged''.

Protest started from Kanpur last evening, where nearly 16,000 students who appeared in the CPMT in the city took to the streets after only 20 were declared qualified in the test.

In the UP CPMT results, out of the total 80,572 examinees only 15,086 candidates were declared qualified.
