Report on farmers' suicide in the final stages

Mumbai, June 16 (UNI) Only a negligible amount of various financial packages that are announced by the Union and the state governments to the farmers in the country, and it needs to take corrective measures in this direction, says a report on farmers' suicide in the country.

The report, which is in the final stages, and which would be presented to Prime Minister early next month, has also suggested to the government for setting up of the agriculture clinic or agriculture training institutes at the block levels in all the farmers' belt all over the country.

''We also have the feedback that the fertiliser comanies are not meeting stipulation in the law that they would spend 20 per cent of what they earn on the farmers' education,'' said an D S Rawat, Secretary General of the ASSOCHAM.

''In the report, we are not only counting reasons for their suicides but also suggesting a slew of measures to the government to effectively deal with the problem,'' he said.

Over the last couple of years, Vidarbha region of Maharshtra, parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have witnessed hundreds of farmer's suicide. Though, both the state governments and the Union government have announced various incentives in the form of the financial packages, the problem remains more or less the same.
