Srinagar, Jun 16 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Vigilance Organisation (VO) today arrested a Rural Development Department (RDD) official caught red-handed accepting a bribe and also booked a warden of Gujjar and Bakerwal hostel for possessing disproportionate assets.

A VO spokesman said that one Manzoor Ahmad Ganai lodged a written report with organisation that Abdul Majid Bhat, works supervisor, RDD Block (Tangmarg) was demanding Rs 1500 as illegal gratification for allowing him to start the execution of a work already issued in his favour by the Block Development Officer (BDO) Tangmarg.

He said the VO, after registering a case, laid a successful trap and accused works supervisor was caught red handed while accepting the bribe of Rs 1500 from the complainant in the premises of Block Development Office Tangmarg.

The tainted money was recovered from his possession in presence of independent witnesses.

The accused was taken into custody for further investigation.

The spokesman said the Organisation also registered a case under the relevant provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act against Manzoor Hussain alias Gulshan, Warden of Gujjar and Bakerwal Hostel Rajouri, for having acquired property, disproportionate to his known sources of income by misuse of official position and indulging in corrupt practices.

He said the accused officials has acquired movable and immovable assets which include a house with four shops at Moulana Azad Nagar, Kandi Mohalla, a house with ten shops at Malik Market Rajouri, another house with two shops with five kanals of land at village Kote Thanna Mandi and a Maruti car.

He has also investment in a number of Bank Accounts and LIC Policies.

The verification prima facie established that Hussain is in possession of assets disproportionate to his known and visible sources of income which constitutes offences punishable under section 5(1) (e) r/w section 5(2) P.C Act 2006.
