Badal calls on Shekhawat

Chandigarh, June 15 (UNI) Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal called on Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat at his residence in New Delhi today.

The meeting was officially described as a courtesy call by Mr Badal.

However, the meeting assumed significance in view of the ''likelihood'' of Mr Shekhawat contesting the Presidential election as an independent.

While talking to the reporters, Mr Badal said he had an old friendship and relationship with Mr Shekhawat. Mr Shekhawat has done a commendable job during his tenure as Vice-President.

''He is one of the outstanding statesmen of the country,'' Mr Badal added.
