Asom CM supports UPA's Presidential candidate

Guwahati, June 16 (UNI) Asom Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today welcomed Rajasthan Governor Pratibha Patil's selection as the UPA's candidate for the Presidential polls.

Talking to reporters here, Mr Gogoi said: ''I am delighted at the choice. She is one of the best candidates for the President's post.'' He also appreciated the UPA leadership, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi, for supporting Ms Patil's candidature.

Underlining that Ms Patil could be the first woman President of the country, he said: ''It demonstrates the UPA's recognition of the capable woman and presents before the world that we have efficient women leaders.'' Recounting his long association with Ms Patil, Mr Gogoi said, ''She is a dignified and capable lady and prefers to keep a low-profile.'' UNI
