Guwahati, Jun 16 (UNI) Asom Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today reiterated his opposition to the current delimitation process, if there was no increase in the number of seats in the state.

Addressing a press meet here, Mr Gogoi said, '' We want the process to be stopped as it is not the proper time. Without any increase in seats, the process will hardly serve any real purpose.'' He said the government had noted the widespread public resentment and protests against the draft proposal and he had communicated the same to the Prime Minister and the UPA chairperson.

''I have told them that the draft proposal has completely upset the people of the state. The state has unique ethnicity patterns and it should be borne in mind,'' he added.

Mr Gogoi had also taken up the matter with the chairman of the Delimitation Commission and updated him on the protests the draft proposal had incited.

The chairman had expressed his inability to stop the process without any order from the Central government or Court, Mr Gogoi said, adding that the state government had been putting pressure on the Centre since long not to push ahead the exercise, as it would lead to trouble.

The draft proposal for delimitation of constituencies was met with protests in the state by all quarters. The main objection was raised on the issue that delimitation had been based on population figures that consisted of a large number of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.

The compilation of the National Register of Citizens is viewed as a must before the delimitation process could be carried on.

The public hearing of the Delimitation Commission in the state, slated for this fortnight, had been suspended as of now.
