Open session on farmers' suicide a good move: Gowda

Bangalore, June 15 (UNI) Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda today lauded his son and Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy for holding an interactive session of farmers' representatives to discuss the increasing cases of farmers' suicide in Karnataka yesterday.

''The open session of 'assembly of farmers' representatives' from each district of Karnataka, to find out a solution to the vexed issue, is a unique experiment in participative democracy. This can do away with party politics and help policy makers acquaint themselves with the problems or requirements of the affected farmers,'' he said in a statement here.

The JD(S) supremo said such moves could emerge as a potential way forward for validation of state policy by the masses during times when flaws of electoral democracy were increasingly becoming apparent, leading to dissatisfaction and disenchantment with the very model of democracy the country was practicing.

''Karnataka has to find a way out to tackle the increasing number of suicides although it pervades not only the jurisdiction of the state, but most parts of the country. I am confident Karnataka will bring out a scheme which can be adopted on a national level,'' he added.
