Multi-pronged approach necessary for mitigation of disasters: CS

Shimla, Jun 15 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Secretary SS Parmar today stressed upon the need of multi-disciplinary and multi-pronged approach management techniques to mitigate the impact of natural disasters.

Addressing a two-day workshop on ''Seismic evaluation and strengthening of existing structures,'' he said in order to ensure sustainable development, a system of mitigation and management of such disasters by adopting good practices was the need of the hour.

Mr Parmar said proper infrastructural planning and environment protection could minimise potential risks besides avoiding man made disasters.

Prior evaluation of existing circumstances was essential, he said.

He said that a national programme for capacity building of engineers in earthquake risk management has been initiated in the state and as a part of this programme.

Seismic evaluation and retrofitting of various lifeline buildings was also being carried out here, he added.
