Kalam meets widows of farmers
Yavatmal, Maharashtra, June 15 (UNI) President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam today met widows of three farmers from Vidarbha region of Maharashtra who committed suicide due to indebtedness.
The widows were part of a delegation of Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS), a voluntary organisation working among farmers in the region, which met Dr Kalam here this afternoon.
They apprised the President about their problems and asked him to intervene to alleviate their suffering, according to a VJAS press release here.
Dr Kalam gave the widows a patient hearing and assured to look into their problems, the release said.
The VJAS delegation included members of other bereaved families besides activists of the organisation.
The meeting took place during Dr Kalam's day-long visit to Vidarbha. The president was on a brief tour of the region during which he attended functions at Yavatmal, Wardha and Nagpur.
