Indo-American Chamber debates IPR from a judicial perspective

Mumbai, Jun 15 (UNI) Minister of State for Industry Ashwini Kumar in a message to the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC) today conveyed that the current century is completely a new era for Intellectual Property Rights(IPR) from the context of general transition from traditional knowledge to bio resources.

He conveyed the message to the ongoing two day IACC conference being held to boost IPRs on pharmaceutical and biotech patents as well to give an insight into IPR regimes from a judicial perspective.

IACC President Deepak Pahwa emphasised, '' There is an urgent need to create a patent culture in the country, which can respect innovations taking place not only in hallowed institutions but in grassroots.'' While speaking on the topic of IPR in India, Industries Jt Secretary R S Julaniya said, ''In the 11th plan a sum of Rs 320 crore has been earmarked to strengthen the patent regime in the country.'' He advocated that Indian industry must adopt emerging new technologies to make the industry much more competitive in the world market.

Adding further, Novartis Vice President and Managing Director Ranjit Shahani said, ''Indian pharmaceutical and biotech patents is in centre of controversy over the data protection.'' Hence IPR laws in the country needs to be strengthened to attract global pharmaceutical majors to carry out research and development in the area of medicine in the country.
