TN: Cargo plane catches fire, pilots leap to safety
Chennai, June 15: Two pilots of a small cargo plane had a miraculous escape by leaping out of the aircraft after it caught fire, while landing on a runway between Old airport and Kamaraj Domestic airport here today.
Airport sources told sources that the flight owned by the private 'First Flight' courier company was carrying consignments from Delhi and other places. It caught fire before completing the landing drill following locking of the hydraulic front tyre.
After informing the problem to the Air Traffic Control, the pilots jumped out from the aircraft and ran for safety.
Fire tender units rushed to the spot and put out the fire. The loss due to the mishap was not yet ascertained, sources said.
Since the incident took place on the middle of the main runway, operations of other flights were disrupted to some extent. Steps were being taken to remove the aircraft from the runway, the sources added.
