Shillong, Jun 15 (UNI) The Assam Regiment today celebrated its 67th raising day at Happy Valley with pomp and gaiety.

The celebration started with Brig RN Singh laying the wreath at the Central War Memorial to pay homage to those who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the Nation.

This was followed by a Special Sainik Sammelan at Parson Parade ground, where personnel excelling in different field or discipline were felicitated.

A cultural extravaganza - showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the North East was organized in the Rhino Auditorium. The event was witnessed by Meghalaya Sports and Youth Affairs minister Zenith M Sangma, Air Officer Commanding-in-Charge of Eastern Air Command Air Marshal PK Barbora, General Officer Commanding 101 Area Major General Vinod Nayanar and other civil and military dignitaries.

The fusion of military bands kept the dignitaries enthralled with the total blend of Eastern sensibilities with Western Sounds, presented by the Brass, Pipe and Jazz Bands of the Assam Regimental Centre. The fusion showcased the transition of notes from the lower pitch of pipes to the much higher notes of Brass merging into electronics of Jazz.

Assam Regimental Centre has achieved total domination by winning all the Area tournaments during the year 2006-07. The Regimental Centre YBC team once again proved themselves by wining the coveted Runners up Trophy amongst 37 teams fielded from the Army and Para Military Forces in the fifth Blood Firing Championship.
