Mumbai, June 14 (UNI) Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Standing Committee chairman Ravindra Waikar today urged the civic authorities to spend the money properly as it had been observed that only 50-60 per cent of the budget was generally utilised by the departments concerned every year.

''It is revealed that a number of works for which provision had been made was not even started at the fag end of the last fiscal year,'' Mr Waikar said while initiating discussion on the BMC budget estimates.

He pointed out that at many places, the de-silting work undertaken by the Corporation had not been completed.

He said the citizens of Mumbai should be given adequate water supply and for that, many mains would be changed and the slums along the pipes would be demolished to stop water thefts.

He also emphasised on the health facilities in the BMC hospitals and on education.

Stressing on the need for playground and gardens in the city, Mr Waikar urged the authorities to use the additional Rs 2 crore for developing the gymnasium, children's park and jogging tracks in the playgrounds and solar lamps should be used in the playgrounds and gardens and additional provision for it should be made.

Welcoming the proposal for building BMC malls, he said people are reluctant to buy things from BMC markets and the malls are the need of the day.

Raising the issue of development of cemetries in the city, besides good sanitation and seating facilities, Mr Waikar said additional allocation will be made in the next budget.
