Smuggled rice consignment for Yemen seized

Chennai, June 14 (UNI) The Civil Supplies CID have seized 100 tonnes of rice, meant for supply through the Public Distribution System, worth Rs 12 lakhs, at the Chennai port before being smuggled out to Yemen and arrested two persons.

Police said acting on a tip off, they intercepted five container trucks with the help of Customs authorities and effected the seizure.

Police have spread the dragnet for three more persons, including two rice mill owners, in this regard.

Preliminary enquiries revealed that the accused might have purchased huge quantity of ration rice from various parts of the state, including Vellore and Villupuram districts.
