Shalimar likely to set up copra processing unit in Andaman
Port Blair, Jun 14 (UNI) Shalimar Chemical Works Ltd, a private sector company, is likely to set up a modernised copra processing unit in Andaman and Nicobar islands.
The company's sales and promotion deputy manager J P Sarkar told the reporters here today that they might consider this so that they could use the same for coconut oil production of international standards.
Launching the company's brand product here, Mr Sarkar also hinted at the possibility investing on spices development sector, which has tremendous scope in these islands.
''Due to decades of operation in this field, Shalimar today has access to the best grade raw materials harvested at the coastal regions of the country. Shalimar's Popular is manufactured from this high grade raw materials and processed in the traditional way with no additional preservative,'' he added.
He also said the quality of copra in the island is considered to be the best in the country but the method of production is not correct.
Coconut plantation and copra production is the main source of income for most of the tribal population living in Nicobar. Almost all the islands here have huge plantation of coconut.
