PHRC orders inquiry into lathicharge on jobless teachers

Kapurthala, June 14 (UNI) Taking suo moto of media reports on the lathi charge on jobless teachers on June 10 near the residence of Education Minister Upinderjit Kaur , Punjab Human Rights Commission (PHRC) has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Commission IGP H S Randhawa will conduct the inquiry and submit the report to PHRC by July 2.

Mr Randhawa alongwith Commision officials visited the town today conduct on the spot inquiry and recorded the statements of the mediapersons and unemployed teachers. Computer treachers who had also faced the wrath of the police at Sultanpur Lodhii on June 2 also came here to record their statements before the Commission.

Renuka Puri, Neena and Gurdeep Singh all computer teachers recorded their statements before the Commisson. They stated that the police lathi charged them on June 2 when they had gone to Sultanpur Lodhi to submit a memorandum to the Education Minister.

They told the Commission inquiry team that more than six teachers were injured in the lathi charge and they were not even medically examined and no treatment was given to them. They criticised the role of the police to curb their peaceful agitation for jobs.

They also criticised the police for registering a false case against 300 students for the violation of section 144 CrPc.

Mr Randhwa told mediapersons that he would submit the inquiry report before July 2 and the Commission would take action on the findings accordingly. He said Commission would record the statements of mediapersons and jobless teahcers today and record the statements of administration tomorrow.

Meanwhile unemployed BEd teachers front President Sukhdarshan Singh along with other teachers met Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in Chandigarh yerterday to demand the recruitment of 45,000 teachers as promised in the SAD election manifesto.

Mr Sukhdarshan Singh claimed that Mr Badal had not acceeded to their demand.
