Parliament can abolish monarchy in Nepal
Kathmandu, June 14: With the amendment in the Interim Constitution by parliament yesterday, the interim parliament has the power to abolish monarchy by a two-thirds majority if the king is found to be involved in conspiracy against the Constituent Assembly election.
Under article 159 of the Constitution, Nepal government would table a motion for the abolition of the monarchy if the king was found to be conspiring putting serious obstacle in holding election peacefully.
The election of the constituent assembly, in November, would decide the future of the monarchy in the nation.
CPN, Maoists wanted to abolish monarchy by a two thirds majority right away, however, the Nepali Congress decided to wait till the completion of election of the constituent assembly.
The interim constitution was amended for the first time since it was promulgated in January this year.
