Ahmedabad, June 14 (UNI) The reputed National Institute of Design (NID) here has sought ''University status'' from UGC for its graduation and post-graduation courses.

''A proposal in this regard has been forwarded to the Union Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), NID director Dr Darlie O Koshy told reporters here today.

Dr Koshy informed that the NID enrols 75 students for graduate courses and 195 for post-graduation courses.

He said the NID is charting a new tomorrow for India through spread of quality design education, design promotion, design innovation hubs, design profession, chartered society for designers, India design council and India design mark.

The NID is starting two new programmes -- Design for Retail Experience (DRE) and Design for Digital Experience (DDE) -- at its Bangalore campus, Dr Koshy informed. The DRE programme will have an integrated approach in designing products, systems and spaces to accommodate multi-sensory experience in retail and visual merchandising and it will be in the context of enhanced user experience.

The DDE focuses on human experience in the context of designing products (information kiosks, handheld communication and navigation devices, and other e-products) and services (e-health, e-banking software applications, digital libraries) in the digital/electronic domain.

Besides, eminent designer Michael Foley has already launched colour research lab at Bangalore campus from April, he added.
