London, June 13 (Reuters) Following are some of the major events to have occurred on June 14 since 1900: 1922 - President Warren G. Harding became the first U.S.

president to broadcast by radio.

1928 - Emmeline Pankhurst, English champion of women's rights, died. An act establishing voting equality for men and women was passed just after her death.

1936 - The Soviet short-story writer and novelist Maxim Gorky died.

1940 - The German army entered and occupied Paris in World War Two.

1946 - John Logie Baird, the Scottish inventor who pioneered the development of television, died.

1951 - The first electronic computer for commercial use was demonstrated at the Bureau of the Census in Philadelphia.

1966 - The Vatican announced the abolition of the Roman Catholic Church's Index of Prohibited Books.

1971 - The New York Times began publication of extracts from top-secret Pentagon papers on the Vietnam War.

1993 - Turkish President Suleyman Demirel asked Tansu Ciller to form a new government, giving the largely Muslim but constitutionally secular country its first woman prime minister.

1994 - Henry Mancini, the American composer of soundtracks for the ''Pink Panther'' movies, ''Days of Wine and Roses'', ''Breakfast at Tiffany's'' and dozens of other hit films, died.

2001 - An official enquiry into the massacre of almost the entire Nepalese royal family blamed Crown Prince Dipendra, saying he had acted in a rage fuelled by drugs and drink.

2004 - The British entrepreneur Richard Branson set a new world record by driving across the English Channel in a James-Bond style amphibious sports car in under two hours.

2005 - Charles Robert Jenkins, a former U.S. army sergeant who deserted to North Korea in 1965, returned to the United States for the first time in four decades.

2005 - Carlo Maria Giulini, a celebrated Italian maestro whose intense and almost spiritual interpretations won him acclaim as one of the great conductors of the 20th century, died at the age of 91.
