PIL on Cauvery water release dismissed

Chennai, Jun 13 (UNI) Madras High Court today dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking to direct the Tamil Nadu Public Works Department to ensure release of waters forthwith from Krishna Raja Sagar Reservoir across River Cauvery as envisaged by the final or interim order passed by the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice A P Shah and Mr Justice P Jyothimani who dismissed the PIL filed by Advocate R Karuppan, however gave liberty to him to make a representation to the state government in respect of his prayer for release of water from Mettur Dam.

''We are sure that in case of such representation received, it will be given proper attention and consideration,'' the Bench added.

In its order, the Bench said ''we find absolutely no basis in support of the allegations made by the petitioner. It is pertinent to note that both the state governments (Tamilnadu and Karnataka) have now approached the Supreme Court and the Apex Court has already seized of the matter.

''In these circumstances, this nature of petition cannot be entertained in writ jurisdiction,'' the Bench said and dismissed the petition.
