New Delhi, June 13 (UNI) The first report of chickungunya in Delhi has sent the health officials in huddles.

Calling an emergency meeting in her chamber at Town Hall today, Mayor Ms Arti Mehra discussed with Commissioner (Health), Municipal Health Officer and Deputy Health Officers of the zones over spread of the disease.

According to sources, she assessed the preventive measures. The Mayor reportedly called for same treatment and approach to contain the chickungunya as dengue since cause of both is aedes mosquito.

Directing the health officials to be vigilant, she stressed awareness programmes in June. Significantly, the Deputy Health Officers (DHOs) of the Zones were asked to undertake more field visits than usual.

"One should inspect at least 10 houses everyday," she told the officials. The domestic breeder checkers should be directed to visit their houses more frequently, she said.

Ms Arti also directed the DHOs to involve community participation through the local Councillors representing wards on every first and third Saturday.

The community participation should basically involve RWAs, NGOs and other interest groups. The target should be to spread awareness about measures that can prevent and contain chickungunya, malaria and dengue.
