Indore, June 13 (UNI) An 88 km-long Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) -- a system which exists in 30 cities of the world -- would be built here, under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission scheme.

As per official information, during the first phase, BRTS from Niranjanpur square and Rajiv Gandhi statue would be completed in next one-and-half years.

Apart from facilitating transport, this would increase the efficiency of roads by 30 per cent and help in reducing pollution.

Besides Indore, work under the BRTS system is underway in seven other cities. In Indore, a riverside corridor scheme is being prepared.

Under the BRTS system, a separate lane would be built in the middle for city buses. Besides, separate lanes would be built for pedestrians, cycles, motorcycles and other vehicles.

Bus stops and entrance door of BRTS buses would be at the same height. Special attention would be laid on infrastructure of roads, design of vehicles and ITS.

Services like drinking water, drainage, sewage and electricity would be underground.

A green lane would be made on the corridor and trees would be planted.

The BRTs buses would start plying within 1.5-2 years.
