Toll in Bangladesh landslides touches 103

Dhaka , June 12: Death toll from yesterday's disastrous landslides in Bangladesh's southeastern city of Chittagong rose to 103 till this afternoon with the recovery of 21 more bodies.

Chief Advisor of Bangladesh caretaker government Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed and army chief General Moeen U Ahmed flew to Chittagong from the capital Dhaka, met the victims and distributed relief among the distressed people.

''Our first task is to rescue the people, treat and help rehabilitate them,'' he said talking to reporters at worst-hit Kaijakona area.

The Chief Advisor assured that steps would be taken to solve the water-logging problem in Chittagong city. He said those who are involved in cutting hills illegally will be punished through investigation.

Police and fire brigade who are making frantic efforts to trace the missing people recovered 21 bodies from debris. Most bodies were recovered from the worst-hit Lebu Bagan in Hathazari sub-district, near to Chittagong cantonment.

Rescuers said dozens of people are still feared missing in swamps of rainwater and mud.

The Chittagong city experienced 397 mm of rain in last 48 hours, met office said.
