LISTER claims success in stem cell therapy

Chennai, June 12 (UNI) Lifeline Institute of Stem Cell Therapy and Research (LISTER) here today claimed a series of successes in restoring normal functioning in patients who suffered paralysis after road accidents using stem cell therapy.

Lifeline Multi Speciality Hospital Chairman J S Rajkumar told newspersons that LISTER was set up in partnership with Nichi in Center for Regenerative Medicine (NCRM), an Indo-Japanese institute focused on harvesting and preparing stem cells used in the therapy.

Based on original research and development, they tasted success first in February this year with 25-year-old Akbar Ali who sustained spinal injury in July last at his workplace in Dubai.

Ali underwent autologous (own body) stem cell therapy in December last year. LISTWER aspirated 100 ml of bone marrow fluid from the hip bone. The stem cells were isolated, processed at NCRM and a 20 ml concentrate injected into his spinal fluid.

The patient regained 100 per cent sensation and motor ability, Dr Rajkumar claimed while presenting Akbar Ali to the mediapersons.

In their continued efforts to further stem cell therapy, LISTER had five completely paralysed patients who showed significant muscle improvement in varies degrees of motor recovery with 14 more patients showing significant sensation in the paralysed area, Dr Rajkumar claimed.

''By all scientific parameters, this represents a significant medical breakthrough not only in India but in the world of medicine,'' he said.
