Kaushambi, June 12 (UNI) About 400 cartridges and two empty cannon shells were recovered from a house in Manjhanpur area of the district.

The recovery was made when Neelu of Shamlabad village was getting a drain dug out in his dwelling on Friday, Senior Superintendent of Police R P Singh said today.

The news soon spread in the village and later police also came to know about it.

Meanwhile, police has confiscated the ammunition and was interrogating Neelu and the labourers working on the drain.

According to police, the cache could date back to the era of First War of Independence in 1857, when cartridges made of brass were being used.

Mr Singh informed that efforts were being made to ascertain the exact age of the cartridges and cannon shells.
