TN bypoll: 28 candidates in fray

Madurai, June 11 (UNI) In all 28 candidates are in the race for the by-election to the Madurai West Assembly constituency, after the expiry of the deadline for withdrawal of nominations today.

Those in the fray include nominees of the Congress, AIADMK, Puthiya Thamizhagam (PT), DMDK and BJP.

Of the total 39 nomination received, the papers of 10, all independents, were rejected after scrutiny. An independent candidate withdrew his nomination.

Polling is slated to be held on June 26 and counting of votes on June 29.

The by-poll was necessitated by the death of 'rebel' AIADMK legislator S V Shanmugham in February.
