Kottayam, June 11 (UNI) Bharathiya Janatha Party-Minority Morcha National Vice President P J Thomas today came down heavily on the institutions in Kerala obtaining minority status in the name of religion.

Addressing newspersons here, he contended that in the Kerala context, Special Educational Zone, based on minority status, was an ''unnecessary demand''.

The minority status system would destroy social justice and communal amity prevailing in the education sector, he said and added that it would be detrimental to the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) as they would be alienated from the higher education sector.

Mr Thomas questioned the propriety behind the SFI and other Communist organisations raising objections against the minority status after supporting the UPA Government to set up the National Minority Education Commission through the 93rd constitution amendment.

The minority Morcha leader sought the intervention of Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan in the Abhaya case to book the forces trying to sabotage the investigation.
