Guwahati, June 9: The Congress today strongly opposed the demand for creation of a separate Autonomous Council for the religious and linguistic minority.

Congress MP Anowar Hussain, on behalf of the Congress party in the state, today told newsmen that the whole demand was to create communal tension between the Hindus and Muslim for political gain.

Asom United Democratic Front(AUDF) MLA Rashul Haq demanded the Muslim-dominated districts of Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Darrang, Dhubri and Goalpara be turned into an autonomous council.

His demand was received by massive condemnation, forcing even AUDF President Badaruddin Ajmal to disassociate the party from the statement.

Mr Hussain stated that under the constitution such Autonomous Council could not be set up as they were reserved for the tribals under the Sixth Schedule.

The BJP and BHP had already condemned the demand and demanded his arrest for allegedly ''spreading communal hatred''.
