Baripada, June 8 (UNI) A tribal convict undergoing jail term at the Baripada Circle Jail committed suicide by tearing his belly with a blade.

Police said Kunar Murmu (36), with grievous injury and profuse bleeding was rushed to the District Headquarter government Hospital on Wednesday night where he was operated upon but later succumed to the injuries.

Senior Superintendent of the Circle Jail Sibdas Chand said after the post-mortem examination and an enquiry into the circumstances of his death by a judicial magistrate, the jail administration handed over Murmu's body to his wife yesterday. His body was later taken to Jamda village under Bahalda police station.

Mr Chand said Murmu along with two other co-prisoners Prem Chand alias Paresh Berua and Biram Murmu was convicted for their involvement in a bank dacoity case and were sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for five years and a fine of Rs.1000.

The three co-prisoners were transferred from Karanjia Sub-jail to Baripada Circle Jail here in April last after they were sentenced by the court.

According to some co-prisoners, Murmu was upset when he found some red patches on different parts of his body which he suspected to be leprosy eruptions. He was then placed under treatment of a doctor in the jail campus.

This was perhaps the reason that led Murmu to commit suicide, jail sources said.
