Berlin, June 8: Mexican President Felipe Calderon will visit India later this year at the invitation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon said today.

The invitation was extended by Dr Singh at a meeting he had with Mr Calderon where the two leaders, both being economists, had a free-wheeling conversation, Mr Menon said.

Accepting the invitation, the Mexican leader said he hoped to make the visit later this year.

The Mexican President was keen on knowing how India managed to clock a 9.3 per cent growth rate in 2006-07 to which Dr Singh cited several factors, including the high savings rate.

Dr Singh said more than the growth rate it was important that development has been inclusive. The two leaders felt that it was time the Joint Commission, which had its last meeting in 2005, was revived.

Mr Menon said Mexico was an important trading partner of India, whose industry had invested over two billion dollars in the Latin American country, particuarly in pharmaceuticals, IT and steel. It was likely to go up to three billion dollars by this year end, according to Mr Calderon.

The President invited Indian businessmen to invest in infrastructure in his country.
