Address complex issues in Indo-US nuke deal in G8: AEC

Hyderabad, June 8 (UNI) Pointing out that the main hitch in the Indo-US nuclear deal was the gap between India and US nuclear positions, Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) Chairman Anil Kakodkar today stressed the need to solve complex issues in the nuke deal in the ongoing negotiations at the G-8 summit in Berlin.

Speaking to newspersons here, Dr Kakodkar, who was here to participate in the Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC) day celebrations, said ''we should see how the deal would fill the gap between the two countries in terms of nuclear position. The basic requirements of the country should not be affected by the deal and we must take care of the nuclear energy requirements of the country.

Stating that the advantage of the nuke deal was an essential'' to the country's energy needs, he said the Centre should not finalise the deal if there was any negative impact of it.

''We must be very careful that the country's self-reliance in nuclear energy was not affected,'' Dr Kakodkar said, adding that the fundamentals of the country's nuclear technology, which was the basic foundation of its nuclear power, had to be protected. He said nuclear power would only fullfill the energy requirements of the country and it was the solution the for sustainablility of global resources in the wake of increasing climate change.
