2 Vadodara cops convicted
Vadodara, Jun 08 (UNI) Two cops of Karelibaug police station here were today convicted by special court judge S N Kapadia.
ASI Baldev Kumar Rao (Brahmbhatt) and PI Jaydevsinh Gohil were sentenced to one and two-year simple imprisonment respectively for demanding a bribe from a kirana merchant. The two were also fined Rs 1000 and Rs 2000 respectively.
A kirana merchant Ashok Kumar Mangilal Jain had purchased a motorcycle in September 2004 and was given a registration number GJ-6 BD1 by the RTO. However, it so happened that another vehicle with the same number was plying on the road. The two cops then caught Jain and abused and manhandled him, alleging that he was running his bike on a fake number. It later came to light that a mistake had occurred with the other vehicle while the registration number was being painted. Despite this, the two cops wanted a bribe of Rs 10,000 from Jain. They then agreed to accept Rs 7,000.
Jain contacted the ACB here and a trap was laid and the duo was caught red-handed accepting the bribe.
The judge after hearing the arguments of the defence counsel and government lawyer Hitendra Joshi pronounced his judgement, sentencing the two.
