Vaidehi, Rohit, Sweta, Ronit in two semis each
Chandigarh, June 6 (UNI) Second seed Vaidehi Bhagwat of Maharashtra toiled to beat spirited 8th seed Manya Nagpal of Delhi in a fiercely-fought quarter-final match in the girls Under-14 singles match in the AITA Super Series Tennis Tournament at the Sector 10 CLTA Tennis Stadium here today.
The first two sets which the players shared were extened to tie-breaker session. Vaidehi won 7-6 (8), 6-7 (6), 6-2.
The other quarter-final matches in girls U-14 singles were decided in straight sets. Top seed Shweta C Rana (Delhi) defeated Kritika Paul (Delhi) 6-2, 6-4; fifth seed Prathana Tombera (Maharashtra) defeated fourth seed Vaniya Dangwal of Delhi 7-6 (2), 6-4, and third seed Anushka Bhargava (AP) bt Q-Ridhi Hegde (WB) 6-4, 6-1.
Seventh seed Vaidehi also advanced into the girls Under-16 semi-finals after beating fourth seed Jaanesh K Kaur of Chandigarh in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.
Top seed Garima Vatwani of Delhi, unseeded Seeulee Upadhaya (Orissa) and second seeded Shweta C Rana of Delhi joined Vaidehi in semi-finals.
The semi-final line-up is: Garima Vatwani vs Seeulee Upadhaya; Vaidehi Bhagwat (Mah) vs Shweta C Rana.
In the boys Under-16 singles, top seeded Rohit Bisht of Delhi struggled to beat sixth seed Surya Prakash of Andhra Pradesh in three straight sets 6-1, 7-6 (2), 6-0. His opponent in the semi-final will be third seed Mandeep Singh Gill who ousted qualifier Maninder Singh of Haryana in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
Qualifier Saurabh Singh of Delhi will meet qualifier Bharat Bhardwaj of Haryana in the second semi-final. Saurabh was given a tough fight by seventh seed K Pradeep Reddy of AP before winning 6-4, 5-7, 6-1. However, Bharat Bhardwaj outplayed eighth seed Akshat Joshi of Chandigarh in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.
Top seed Rohit also moved into the boys Under-14 singles semi-final by disposing of the challenge of sixth seed Sidharth Rawat of Uttar Pradesh 7-5, 6-2. Joining him in the semi-finals were fifth seed K Pradeep Reddy (AP), fourth seed Digvijay Singh Mehta (Himachal Pradesh) and second seed Ronit Bisht (Delhi).
