Nagaland: Special Bench for PIL on Delimitation

Kohima, June 6: The implementation of delimitation of Assembly Constituencies in Nagaland continued to hang in uncertainty with the Gauhati High Court referring a PIL on the issue to a full-fledged Constitutional Bench of five Judges.

According to official sources here today, a two-member Judge Bench, which heard the PIL filed by the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO) on May 29 last have referred the case to the Constitutional Bench as the matter was '' very serious in nature''.

The case is now scheduled for hearing by the end of this month, sources said.

The CPO had earlier filed a PIL against which it termed the erroneous 2001 Census of Nagaland.

On this basis the Delimitation of Assembly Constituencies was supposed to be implemented.

The Joint Action Committee on Delimitation was formed by the tribal bodies of Wokha, Peren, Kiphite, Longleng and Tseminyu sub-division under Kohima district and Chakhro Public Organisation had also filed another intervention application, which the Court had admitted.

Meanwhile, the Delimitation Commission has convened a meeting with all the members and associate members at New Delhi on June 14 next, sources said.
