Normalcy restored after tribal students call off stir

Imphal, Jun 06 (UNI) Normalcy was restored today on the highways in after the All Tribal Students Union Manipur called off the indefinite blockade in the state today.

Large numbers of trucks plied on the roads today.

Prices of essential commodities had reached sky high due to the blockade by the ATSUM from May 19 last.

ATSUM spokesman Joseph said the state would do whatever required to address all the complaints and grievances of ATSUM with regard to the recently passed 'Manipur Reservation of Vacancies in Posts&Services (for SC and ST) Amendment Bill 2007' before the next Assembly session.

Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and the ATSUM leaders discussed the matter yesterday have decided to increase the Panel List of the recently conducted recruitment of Graduate Teachers beyond the 10 per cent limit to accomodate candidates from Bio-Science and eight ST candidates from General Science.

These seats are left vacant as there were no candidates from ST to fill their reserved quota of 31 per cent.

The state had already issued order for the revitalisation and activation of the Office of the Additional Directors of Education.

Mr Joseph said the state government shall constitute a high-level committee headed by the Minister of Tribal Development and Hills to look into the issues raised by ATSUM in matters of reservation in recruitment and admissions.

The report would be submitted and made public within two months.

The state government had agreed to extend the services of teachers appointed on Contract Basis for another 3 months with effect from April 1, 2007.
