Thailand's junta regime lifts political activity ban

Bangkok, June 5 (UNI) Thailand's junta government has allowed political parties to resume public activities, revoking a ban slapped after the September 19 military coup.

Interim Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont's cabinet at its weekly meeting this afternoon decided to lift the restriction on political activities with immediate effect, a government spokesman announced.

However, the cabinet has not revoked another post-coup order stripping executives of dissolved political parties of their political rights for five years.

As a result, ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and 110 other senior members of his Thai Rak Thai party which was dissolved in last week's landmark constitutional court ruling, cannot contest the general election expected to be held in December this year.
