Karunanidhi seeks recognition for self-respect marriages
Chennai, Jun 5 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has urged Union Law Minister H R Bharadwaj to enact a law to recognise self-respect marriages on the lines of Tamil Nadu.
Mr Karunanidhi, spearheading the self-respect movement for over five decades, had taken up the issue with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and written a letter to the law Minister as a follow up action, an official release here said today.
He said the Government should come forward to support and recognise self-respect marriages, which would go a long way in fostering communal amity.
The Chief Minister requested Mr Bharadwaj to consider the matter on a priority basis and take a favourable decision at the earliest.
After Mr Karunanidhi's letter, the Prime Minister referred the matter to the Social Welfare Ministry for its comments and suggestions, the release added.
