Global warming a disaster: Saifuddin Soz
Srinagar, June 5: Union Water Resources Minister Saif-ud-din Soz today warned that global warming is not only a challenge but a disaster that has already set in.
Inaugurating weeklong celebrations on World Environment Day at Kashmir University here, Prof Soz stressed the need for adopting an environmental-friendly strategy while utilising precious natural resources.
There is paramount need at the global level to adopt cleaner development methods to safeguard the eco-balance, he said, adding as the world has shrunk and ideas travel very quickly from one end to another, Jammu and Kashmir should become part of the global movement to raise awareness about environmental issues.
''Jammu and Kashmir is rich in bio-diversity but unfortunately we are losing it at an alarming pace,'' Prof Soz said and stressed the need for conserving water bodies such as Dal, Wular, Hukarsar and Anchar Lakes.
He said it was necessary to have a master plan not only for Srinagar city but the entire Kashmir valley. Environmental and heritage experts should be co-opted in formulating development schemes, he added.
He expressed the hope that the younger generation would come forward and lead the movement for a better future.
Prof Soz also urged academicians and scientists to take a leading role in preservation of ecology of the state. ''They should not look to the government only. If they create a movement, the government will be convinced and forced to look towards them and seek their guidance in shaping a safe and prosperous future,'' he added.
Prof Soz said the Union Water Resources Ministry has taken a number of measures to prevent over-use of ground water and rain-harvesting. Artificial recharging of ground water has also been introduced in a big way.
Responding to a demand for setting up the National Institute of Aquatic Ecology at Kashmir University, Prof Soz said his Ministry would examine the proposal which should be submitted formally.
He assured that funds would be no constraint as far as preservation of ecology and environment goes. ''But we as a community will need to move ahead with dedication and resolution,'' the Union Minister said.
