DSP Narendra Amin moves anticipatory bail application

Ahmedabad, Jun 5 (UNI) Deputy Superintendent of Police Dr Narendra Amin, who is likely to be questioned or arrested by probing CID Team for his involvement in the fake encounter case of Sohrabbuddin Sheikh, today moved an application in the local court for anticipatory bail.

The City Session Court has set the hearing of the application for tomorrow.

Dr Amin is one of those officers who have been charged with not responding and cooperating to the summons of the probing CID team.

Earlier, three inspectors of Rajasthan police had sought anticipatory bail in this case but the local court had rejected their request stating that the case diary showed their active involvement in the case.

It is likely that Dr Amin could be arrested as a driver of the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), Nathubhai Jadeja, in his judicial confession had mentioned his name (Dr Amin) as one of the persons involved in the fake encounter.

Later on Jadeja had claimed in the court that his statement was taken under duress. On the other hand, Amin had alleged that he had become victim of non-Gujarati police officers.

Sohrabuddin was allegedly gunned down by Gujarat and Rajasthan police in a joint operation on the outskirt of the city on November 26, 2005 after he was branded as a Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant.

He was accused of trying to hatch a conspiracy to kill Chief Minister Narendra Modi. His wife Kausar Bi, who went missing after the incident, was also allegedly killed by the police.

The Gujarat government had admitted before the Supreme Court that Sheikh was killed in a fake encounter with the police officials.

So far, Gujarat police have arrested some top rank police officers, including three top police officials - D G Vanzara and Rajkumar Pandian, and Rajasthan Police SP Dinesh Kumar - who were arrested last month for their involvement in this case.

The incident has triggered a nation-wide debate over fake encounters by police at the behest of their political bosses.
