Mangalore, Jun 5: Congress candidate U T Khader was today declared elected, defeating his nearest rival Chandrashekhar Uchil of the BJP by a margin of over 8,000 votes in the byelection for the Ullal assembly seat.

In the keenly-contested election, in which the ruling coalition partners JD(S) and the BJP intensively campaigned, Congress managed to retain the seat.

While Congress candidate U T Khader secured 46, 271 votes, BJP candidate Chandrashekhar Uchil got 38,239 votes. JD(S) candidate Aboobaker notched up 6,217 while CPI(M) candidate Balakrishna Shetty got 4,807. Independent candidate Bharatraj Shetty polled 1,193 votes.

In the bypoll held on June two, 96,726 voters had exercised their franchise.

The byelection was necessitated following the demise of sitting Congress candidate U T Fareed in April this year.

Barring BJP candidate Chandrashekhar Uchil, all other candidates including JD(S) and CPI(M) lost their deposits.
