Boys top UP Board merit list

Lucknow, June 5 (UNI) Boys captured the first three merit positions in the 2007 high school examinations conducted by UP Board, results of which were announced this afternoon.

However, girls outshone boys with an overall pass percentage of 79.34 compared to boys' 71.18. The aggregate pass percentage stood at 74.41, which was an improvement from last year by 2.75 per cent.

Total of 29,10,876 students appeared in the examination, out of which boys and girls numbered 17,60,744 and 11,50,132 respectively.

The high school examinations were conducted between March 12 and April 12, 2007 at 8,395 centres, while the evaluation of answer sheets was conducted between April 19 and May 6, 2007 by 61,492 teachers.

Of the total number of students taking the examination, 21,65,933 have passed including 12,53,365 boys and 9,12,568 girls.

Interestingly, boys captured 15 positions out of the top 20 in the merit list.

Santosh Jaiswal of Maharani Laxmibai Memorial Inter College, Barabanki secured the first position in merit list with 92.16 per cent marks.

His school mates Sudhanshu Verma and Shobhit Shukla came second and third on the merit list scoring 91.83 and 91.50 per cent marks respectively.

Addressing a news conference, secondary education director Sanjay Mohan said 31,15,441 students had registered for the examination, which was 3,14,641 more than last year.

While, 0.56 per cent students passed with honours, 21.27 per cent students secured first division marks, 59.90 and 16.07 per cent students fell under second and third division grades.
