Bishnois observe World Environment Day

New Delhi, Jun 5 (UNI) To commemorate the message of Shri Guru Jambeshwar Maharaj, a pioneer in environment conservation in the fifteenth century, and to mark World Environment Day", a seminar was organised here today by the Bishnoi Samaj.

Guru Jambeshwar Maharaj has guided the Bishnois with a message "Jeev Daya Palni, Rukh Lilo Nahi Gaven" (Save animals and conserve environment) following which 363 Bishnois had sacrificed their lives to protect trees in Khejarli village in the Jodhpur princely state in 1730.

Paying tributes to the martyrs, the Bishnois here renewed their commitment toward environment and animals and to work for fighting the increasing environment pollution.

The seminar was presided over by All India Bishnoi Mahasabha President Kuldip Bishnoi, Those present on the occasion were Justice (Retd) A.K. Jog, of Allahabad High Court, National Environment Institute (Khejari), Rajasthan, chairman Malkhan Singh Khokhar, all India Bishnoi Animal Protection Organisation chief Hanumal Singh Bishnoi, Mr Hamant Bishnoi (UP), Shri Guru Jambeshwar Trust convener (Delhi) Subhas Bishnoi and Bishnoi Samaj (media prabhari) Arun Johar among others.

A play was also organised on the occasion in the memory of the 363 martyrs of year 1730 on the theme that one should not hesitate to sacrifice one's life to protect a tree.
