Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu, Jun 5 (UNI) Police today resorted to lathi charge to disperse a group of agitators who pelted stones at police personnel at Vedal village on the Chennai-Bangalore National Highway, near here, over a trivial issue.

Police said the trouble started when a local body official, Sarathy (27), was caught by the highway patrol police for riding his motorcycle on the wrong side. As Sarathy abused the police, he was taken into custody.

As the news spread, the villagers blocked the highway, raised slogans against the police and started pelting stones at the police personnel.

Following this, police resorted to lathi charge against the agitators and arrested 20 people, including five women, in this connection.
