Work in Pondy Municipality affected

Puducherry, June 4 (UNI) Functioning of the Municipality and Commune Panchayats here was today affected as those owing allegiance to the Federation of Municipality and Commune Panchayat Employees Association went on a mass casual leave to press their demands.

The employees, demanding among other things Government employee status, promotions and removal of pay anomalies, had embarked on a series of agitations and Chief Minister N Rangasamy had agreed to consider their demands. However, as nothing concrete emerged, they resorted to mass casual leave and staged a demonstration on the beach road.

Public who came to the municipality for various works picketed the municipality building following the stir. Police intervened and pacified them.

Meanwhile, wards of deceased electricity department employees and a few others staged a demonstration in front of the Nehru statue on the beach road, demanding their appointment on compassionate grounds. UNI
