NE high potential in agriculture: Mishra

Kolkata, Jun 4 (UNI) The agriculture production in the North-Eastern region has increased around 31 per cent in connection with high value crop and exotic crops.

Speaking to mediapersons here today at a programme organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce, Union Agriculture Scretary Dr P K Mishra said there is huge potential in floriculture and bamboo plantation as a result of Technological Mission in 2001-02.

The North Eastern region is endowed with bio-diversity , hydro potential, oil gas, coal and forest wealth.

The Union government has taken various initiatives to boost growth in agriculture, horticulture, processing and marketing of agriculutural products in the NE region.

The Agriculture Ministry has implemented a Centrally-sponsored Technology Mission on Horticulture in all NE states with the Tenth Plan of Rs 585 crore.

Under two mini missions related to the post-harvest management, marketing and processing, assistance was being provided for the development of infrastructure for establishing cold storages, refrigerated vans and for value addition through promotion of processing units.
